medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (20. February) is the feast day of:

Sadoth (d. 342) Sadoth was bishop of Seleucia and Ctesiphon in Persia in
the mid-fourth century. In the persecution of Christians ordered by Shapur
II, Sadoth and 128 companions were arrested. For over five months the
Christians were tortured, then martyred in Seleucia.

Eleutherius of Tournai (d. 531/532) Eleutherius was born in c. 455 in
Tournai, and in 486 became perhaps the first bishop there. He had good
success evangelizing the Franks, but found himself caught especially in the
conflict between Arian and Catholic Christians. He death was probably from
injuries inflicted by Arians.

Eucherius of Orleans (d. 743) Born in Orleans in c. 690, Eucherius became
a monk in 714 and in 721 was elected bishop of his native city. When he
refused to turn over church goods to Charles Martel for use in the war
against the Moors, Eucherius was banished from his see---first to Cologne
(where he was soon highly honored), then to the monastery of St. Trond in
Belgium, where he died.

Leo the Thaumaturge (d. 780 (787?)) Leo, born in Ravenna in c. 705, was
bishop of Catania in Sicily for nearly a half century. The people honored
him as a saint and have passed on numerous legends of his life and
holiness. The nickname "thamaturge" comes from the posthumous miracles
worked at his tomb.

Elisabeth Picenardi (blessed) (d. 1468) Elisabeth was born in Cremona
(Italy) in c. 1428. At an early age she became a tertiary of the Servite
order. She was much sought for her guidance and devotion to the Virgin
Mary. She was beatified in 1804.
