Thanks, Christopher, for reminding me that I had hoped to add more
commentary to these two Diplomatica samples. They are rather obtuse by
themselves. I had interpreted the original commentary the best I could
and am waiting to hear an opinion from Fr. Columba (the exhibit author).
However, on a strictly provisional basis (i.e., I may be wrong) and for
any interested listmember, I think they might signify as follows: (NB:
I'm only tangentially a medievalist, am primarily an archaeologist, and
my Latin skills are "ancient"!)

This seems to be a papal bull by Nicholas I to Emperor Louis II,
written on papyrus, dated 863 AD. There was a synod at Metz in June 863
which recognized Lothair II's [second] marriage to Waldraga [he had had
an earlier wife repudiated], but Nicholas suspected bribery and
excommunicated the prelates involved. Could this document be connected
to that controversy?

I think this is a charter by Charlemagne and may be the first
instance of the use of the seal stating his imperial title.
