medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture is this the reason why he was chosen to be the patron of the great 17th-18th cc "Congregation" which bears his name and which was responsible for a remarkable revival of the Benedictine Order --and, coincidentally (via Mabillon, et al.), the foundation of modern medieval studies? > enquiring minds want to know. christopher In this context I would like to pay tribute to one "Dom [Pierre] Hyacinthe Morice, pre^tre, Religieux Be'ne'dictine de la Congre'gation de S. Maur" who from 1742 brought out his massive 3 vol work entitled "Memoires pour servir de preuves a l'histoire ecclesiastique etr civile de Bretagne [ this is Less Britain or Brittany, not Great Britain] tire's des archives de cette province, de celles de France & d'Angleterre, des recueills de plusieurs sc,avans antiquaires & mis en ordre par ....DMP...." and followed this up with his comparably massive two volume "Histoire eccle'siastique et civile de Bretagne ..." in 1750. It goes without saying that many of the documents he transcribed did not survive the events following 1789 so his work - however limited in terms of commentary, is priceless for anyone interested in mediaeval Brittany. There are 2 original copies in the British Library and a Krauss reprint which one is allowed to photocopy .... I wondered what a Benedictine was doing at this task but now you have set it in context.
