"THE PORTOLAN": JOURNAL OF THE WASHINGTON MAP SOCIETY ISSUE 52 (Winter 2001-2002) -------------------------------------------------------------- Issue 52 (Winter 2001-2002), consisting of 72 pages, including numerous illustrated articles, was published in January 2002 and has been sent to all subscribers and members in good standing of the Washington Map Society. The honorees of the 2001 Ristow Prize competition are announced, and two winning articles are presented. This issue features the research of Dimitris K. Loupis into Piri Reis's Book on Navigation (Kitab-i Bahriye); this is the winning article in the 2001 Ristow Prize competition. French, Spanish, British and American mapping were all key players in the mapping of the territory of the Louisiana Purchase; this is explained in detail by Michael Kimaid, winner of an Honorable Mention for the article in the 2001 Ristow Prize competition. William T. (Chip) Reynolds, who was in charge of a Dutch replica ship Half Moon in New York harbor with a crew of students, recounts the events of September 11, 2001. John Greene presents the thematic maps of Heinrich Scherer in a summary of his president's presentation before the Washington Map Society. A society field trip to the headquarters of the National Geographic Society: mapping is summarized and proves that the NGS is moving quickly with modern mapping techniques. Successful attendance at a map fair takes preparation and the following of a plan: these are presented in "How to Attend a Map Fair." Members who were there describe the Chicago area cartographic events of October 2001 and the meeting of the Texas Map Society in the same month. And there is more. AUTHORS OF ARTICLES IN THIS ISSUE WILLIAM T. (CHIP) REYNOLDS is with the New Netherland Museum and Replica Ship Half Moon in Albany, NY. DIMITRIS K. LOUPIS is the WINNER of the 2001 WALTER W. RISTOW PRIZE IN THE HISTORY OF CARTOGRAPHY AND MAP LIBRARIANSHIP. He is a graduate student in Ottoman-Turkish history at Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey. His current field of research is the Ottomans' perception of space seen through geography, cartography and travel literature, on which he has published a few articles. He is the author of a book in Greek under the title "Piri Reis (1465-1553) and Aegean Charting. Ottoman Cartography and Aegean Lake". MICHAEL KIMAID is the recipient of an HONORABLE MENTION in the 2001 WALTER W. RISTOW PRIZE IN THE HISTORY OF CARTOGRAPHY AND MAP LIBRARIANSHIP. He is currently a doctoral candidate in Early American History at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. JOHN GREENE, for many years its Treasurer, served from 2000-2001 as the President of the Washington Map Society. While his principal interests are US maps prior to 1860 and Northeast US maps, maps by Heinrich Scherer have always been a favorite part of his collection and his research. STEVEN VOGEL is Secretary of the Washington Map Society and a frequent contributor to "The Portolan." ERIC W. WOLF is past president of the Washington Map Society, current President of the Society for the History of Discoveries, and owner and chief of acquisitions of the Fiat Lux Library.
