medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (5. August) is the feast day of:

Memmius (2nd half 3rd cent.) Memmius was the founder and first bishop of
the diocese of Chalons-sur-Marne, and the apostle of the region of
Champagne. Gregory of Tours wrote of the numerous miracles that took place
at Memmius' tomb.

Emygdius (d. 303) Emygdius came from the area around Trier. Late in the
third century he became the first bishop of Ascoli Piceno in Italy. He is
supposed to have been martyred in Diocletian's persecution.

Nonna (d. 374) Nonna was the wife of St. Gregory of Nazianzus the elder,
and mother of Gregory of Nazianzus the Younger. Her son in his writings
frequently presented Nonna as a model of Christian life and piety, the
ideal Christian wife and mother.

Oswald (d. 642) Oswald was born in c. 604 as the son of King Aethelfrid of
Northumbria. After his father's death, Oswald had to flee. He went to the
monastery of Iona, where he was baptized. In 634 Oswald reconquered his
land and set out to convert it to Christianity, in 635 founding the
monastery of Lindisfarne with Aidan, which became the center of missionary
activity. Oswald died in battle against Penda of Mercia (who was not a
Christian, so Oswald is accounted a martyr). Oswald's burial site is
unknown, but his head is supposed to be in the sarcophagus of Cuthbert in
Durham. Oswald had a strong cult throughout Europe in the Middle Ages.

Abel of Rheims (d. c. 755) Abel may have been an Englishman. He worked
with Boniface in Germany as a missionary, and it may have been Boniface who
arranged for Abel to become archbishop of Rheims in 744. Abel was driven
away from his diocese by Bishop Milo of Trier, however, who also laid claim
to Rheims. Abel died in c. 755 in the monastery of Lobbes.
