medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture A good document to understand Bernard's views on "elaborate decoration" is his *apologia* to William of Saint Thierry (ca.1121-1124), in which he condemns the use of excessive decoration in places where the purpose is the exaltation of faith. Though somewhat permissive with the use of decoration in "public" churches, he strongly criticizes its use in monastic buildings.
