medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Greetings--

> Boucher, Francois. 20,000 YEARS OF FASHION: THE HISTORY
> OF COSTUME AND PERSONAL ADORNMENT.

Boucher is a good source, but tends to be somewhat limited in the earlier
periods, so there might not be the sheer volume of good examples to look at.
The examples that are there are all of paintings, statuary, illumination,
etc. and many are in color.

>
> Kohler (o with an umlaut), Carl. A HISTORY OF COSTUME.
> Alexander K. Dallas, translator.

Kohler is an uneven source, partially because it mixes author's speculation
alongside extant garments when it comes to the patterning section, and
doesn't always tell you which is which. I have also found it has
chronological problems.

> Norris, Herbert. MEDIEVAL COSTUME AND FASHION. Mineola,
> New York: Dover Publications, 1999.

Norris is one of the standards and generally fine for getting an overall
view of various styles. The main difficulty is that it's all line drawings,
and those can introduce errors.

> Piponnier, Francoise and Perrine Mane. DRESS IN THE
> MIDDLE AGES. Caroline Beamish, translator.

Piponnier is a fairly thin volume and is more concerned with the societal
aspects of dress rather than the actualy styles.

One to add: If you suspect the work dates from the Renaissance, an
excellent source is Jacqueline Herald's _Dress in Renaissance Italy_ (I
think that's the title).
