                     Agent Based Social Simulation
Special Iinterest Group Meeting in Prague
                         10th - 11th July, 2001

                         CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

The last meeting of the SIG in Amsterdam last February made significant
progress on planning for the future direction of European research on
agent based social simulation. The key developments are in the area of
industrial engagement, the relationship of ABSS to the rest of the Multi
Agent Systems research community and applications to social policy.

The Prague meeting will be devoted both to working groups on industrial
engagement -- using a development project of Philips Research as a live
point of focus -- and on social policy. There will also be a more
general discussion on the future of ABSS research in Europe.

The Special Interest Group is part of AgentLink 2, the European Network
of Excellence in Agent Based Computing. Funding is available in the
usual way for participants from member nodes of the network.
Participation in the SIG is open to anyone with an interest in the field
though participants who are not from member nodes cannot be funded.

The emphasis of the SIG is changing under AgentLink 2 to promising areas
of application of ABSS, but this is not intended to exclude those whose
interests are more formal and less directly related to applications. We
feel that it is important to maintain the interaction between those with
interests in (say) BDI and deontic logics and those whose interests are
in the representation of social issues. It is a common view within the
SIG that all strands of ABSS research will benefit from interaction by
academics with labs and institutes concerned with direct applications to
software design and development and to social policy issues -- and
conversely.

We believe that the SIG is a leading force in an exciting new departure
for the social simulation community. The meetings have moved away from
the standard presentation and question-answer format. They are focused
on development issues and evoke lively and creative discussion.

I have attached the web page with the full call for participation and
links to current documents, the online application form and the current
schedule of events.
