Gathering And Using Feedback From Students For Course Development
led by Mike Seignior and James Wisdom

date: 13th March 2001
venue: cltad, The London Institute, 65 Davies Street, London
cost: 140.00

**************************************************************
Aims: To enable participants to consider the place and process of gathering feedback and evaluation from their students. To share, compare and critique existing practice so that participants can identify and develop relevant and effective procedures to suit the needs of their particular circumstances.

We will be exploring approaches to feedback in terms of theory whilst considering the range of practice that is currently used in a variety of contexts. We will look in particular at feedback methodologies that might be more appropriate within the loci of Art and Design courses. We will discuss the relationship between feedback gathered for teaching enhancement and course development purposes and the imperatives for the systematic gathering of evaluation for institutional quality assurance practices and policies.

The workshop will consider the variety of feedback methods that tutors can use and their effectiveness when employed to evaluate:-
a) individual teaching sessions;
b) projects, units or modules;
c) full reviews of courses (named programmes of study).

Participants: The day is intended for tutors, course designers and leaders, and staff with particular responsibilities for quality assurance

Mike Seignior teaches theatre design at the Central School of Speech and Drama. He also teaches on the School's SEDA accredited PG Dip. in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education course which is run largely for tutors in Art and Design or theatre related subjects. Mike has been closely involved with the major course developments undertaken by the Production, Art & Design Department which made extensive use of formal and informal student feedback and evaluation as part of the development process.

James Wisdom is a consultant specialising in educational development in Higher Education. He has worked extensively in the area of course evaluation, student consultation and feedback within many disciplines and all types of universities and colleges. He contributed a chapter on this subject to Approaches to Staff Development (ed. Dr. Angela Brew) 1994.
