Apologies for Cross Posting

We are pleased to announce that Graham Gibbs' (1988) classic Learning by
Doing, which has been out-of-print for several years, is now available on
the Geography Discipline Network (GDN) pages at:
http://www.chelt.ac.uk/gdn/gibbs/index.htm

We used Graham's book in the paper that Alan Jenkins and I wrote on the
application of Kolb's experiential learning theory in geography
(http://www.chelt.ac.uk/gdn/discuss/kolb1.htm). Several educational
developers have told us that they have found the paper useful in
postgraduate certificate courses for new lecturers (and not just for
geographers!). A revised version of the paper (Kolb's experiential learning
theory and its application in geography in higher education) has recently
been published in the Journal of Geography 99 (5), 185-195 (2000).

Other recent additions to the GDN Web pages include:

1. Details of the conference programme on 8 May 2001 on 'Learning
support for disabled students undertaking fieldwork'

2. New case studies of interesting practices in teaching, learning and
assessment of geography, earth and environmental sciences continue to be
added to the site (http://www.chelt.ac.uk/gdn/resdata.htm). The resource
database is now being developed on behalf of the Subject Centre for
Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences.

3. Examples of four programme specifications developed by geography and
earth science departments (http://www.chelt.ac.uk/gdn/qaa/index.htm#ps).
More are expected soon.

4. Copies of various recent conference papers on teaching and learning
issues (http://www.chelt.ac.uk/gdn/confpub.htm)

5. Response to HEFCE (2000) Review of Research 00/37 by the National
Subject Centre for Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
(http://www.chelt.ac.uk/el/philg/gdn/res00_37.htm
<http://www.chelt.ac.uk/el/philg/gdn/res00_37.htm> )

6. A copy of: 'Fieldwork in the Geography, Earth and Environmental
Sciences Higher Education Curriculum: an annotated bibliography'
<http://www.chelt.ac.uk/el/philg/gdn/disabil/fieldwk.htm> ).

Best wishes

Mick
