THEME SESSION and WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT Northeast Region GSA, Spring 2002 March 24-27, 2002; Sheraton, Springfield. MA Theme Session: New Frontiers in Geologic Microanalysis There are many new advancements involving the application and development of microanalytical techniques in geology. These techniques are providing significant new insights into processes in many fields. Abstracts are encouraged which address the application of microanalytical techniques to new problems in geology or the novel application of new or refined techniques to existing problems or both. Relevant topics might include (but are not restricted to) such techniques as MicroXANES, Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD), microprobe monazite, xenotime, and zircon geochronology, cathodoluminescence, laser probe mass spectrometry, ion probe mass spectrometry, Auger spectroscopy, atomic force or tunneling microscopy, etc. Convenors: Michael J. Jercinovic ([log in to unmask]), and Michael L. Williams ([log in to unmask]) SHORT COURSE/WORKSHOP: Microprobe Monazite Geochronology; Methods, Applications, and Challenges for the Future Northeast Regional GSA, Spring 2002 March 24, 2002; University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA Offered in conjunction with Theme Session: Frontiers in Geologic Microanalysis. This short course is intended as a rather informal workshop to discuss the state of development of microprobe geochronology, specifically directed toward monazite U-Th-total Pb techniques. Current techniques employed at the University of Massachusetts will be demonstrated and discussed, but it is hoped that participants will bring data, demonstrations, and insights. Please contact conveners with suggestions or potential contributions. Participants are encouraged to submit an abstract to the associated theme session (Abstract Deadline: December 18, 2001). (Sunday - afternoon only, March 24) Michael L. Williams ([log in to unmask]) and Michael J. Jercinovic ([log in to unmask]), University of Massachusetts Abstract deadline: December 18, 2001 Abstracts for all sessions must be submitted online at the GSA web site, www.geosociety.org. Theme sessions will include only volunteered papers. Please contact individual convenors directly. Address requests for general information regarding theme sessions to Mark Leckie ([log in to unmask]) or Michele Cooke ([log in to unmask]). Michael L.
