Whalley Abbey is in the Ribble Valley, east of Lancashire's
administrative capital of Preston, and within view of Pendle Hill (of
witch trials fame). A cistercian (?) foundation, after the Reformation
it passed into the hands of, I believe, the Ashton family (still
prominent in the area), who quarried the site extensively. Some few of
the buildings have been retained, and the site is at times open to the
public.

East-central Lancashire, then, and a very pleasant setting.
