Interim Saints - March 15th

ARISTOBULUS, martyr (1st cent.)

Nothing is known for certain of S. Aristobulus, who was one of the
seventy disciples of our Lord.

LONGINUS, martyr (1st cent)

. . . there is the greatest uncertainty on every point connected with
Longinus.

NICANDER, martyr (about A.D. 302)

S. Nicander flourished in the reign of Diocletian, in Egypt . . . he
was denounced to the governor, who sentenced him to death.

MATRONA, virgin and martyr (date unknown)

Three saints of this name are commemorated on this day. At Barcelona,
one called Virgin and Martyr, another of Thessalonica . . . called
Martyr, but it is not said that she was a virgin; another at Capua, in
Campania, where she is said to be a Virgin and a native of Portugal.

S. Matrona of Barcelona was early left an orphan . . . Having been
denounced as a Christian, she was thrown into prison and starved to
death.

S. Matrona of Thessalonica was the slave of a Jewess, who having
discovered that her servant was a Christian, beat her to death with a
stick.

ZACHARIAS, pope (A.D. 752)

Zacharias, a Greek by birth, the son of Polychronius, was educated with
care in every science
. . . The innocence of his life, and the vigour of his understanding,
were accompanied by a natural kindliness which fascinated all with whom
he was brought in contact.
