Well how deep do you think a metal detector goes ? Let me tell you ! :>) The average depth a find is detected (lets say the size of a medieval hammered penny) is about 3" - 6" no... not feet but inches, usually well within the plough soil and out of any stratification levels .True you can go deeper say 18" if the hull of the Titanic is down there and as for dirty big holes perhaps a slight exaggeration ? Now come on you lot stop being so closed minded about MD's they are scientific instruments to be used as you see fit for the site you are excavating.Lets be honest what your really afraid of is what other people may think aren't you?
