Dear Gillian (and anyone else in the dark),

BRG stands for Business Records Group, which is a new Specialist Interest
Group of the Society of Archivists. Dare I add that formation of the
group has been discussed on this list and articles have appeared in the
Society's Newsletter.

Jeannette.

Dear Colleagues,

As chairman of the BRG I was unhappy about coverage of the formation of
BRG in the latest SRG Newsletter and was intending to write to the editor
and secretary in due course, but due to the flurry of messages on NRA felt
that I should respond here.

Firstly, I agree with Elaine that contact details for the editor should
appear in the Newsletter, as they have done so in previous issues. I
think the comment about "profit hungry monsters" could be seen as
offensive, but as a business archivist I've learned to turn a blind eye
and have deaf ears where the "opinions" of fellow professionals are
concerned.

What does concern me is the misrepresentation of the BRG's aims. BRG is
continually referred to in the text as being for archivists in the
commercial sector, whereas two of the reasons for the creation of the
group was to represent any archivist responsible for business collections
and to work to overcome some of the prejudices about business archives and
archivists working in that sector. When a report was provided by a member
of the BRG committee and it appears on the page opposite Mark's editorial
and the report of the SRG AGM why does he consistently refer to us as
Business Archives Group - I suppose that would have spoiled his little
joke on the front page.

As one who was intending to remain in SRG as well as joining BRG, I would
like to point out that not all of us are intending to pack our bags, but
such reporting is bound to ruffle feathers and reinforce prejudices. For
the benefit of those SRG members not on this list I hope that the textual
errors will be corrected in the next issue.

Jeannette Strickland
Chairman, BRG

Elaine and SRG officers and list
As a former business archivist I would just like to say I was not offended
by the above phrase when I read SRG News, thinking it was a joke rather
than
an undeserved and plain offensive slur caused by lack of nerve or
incompetence - phrases which can only cause offence on an online list and
arguably more than the above phrase does. Some things can just be passed
over, in my opinion.
Though I do agree the editor's name on the SRG editorial would be a nice
idea, though I do not doubt Mark's nerve and competence.
Sarah
