We've installed one using Quattor - using a profile shared by QWG.

This profile sets up required accounts, crons etc and installs the rpms required on top of SL

Hi Mark

Any news on installation via rpms rather than a complete OS image.
That would sit better with the ECDF systems teams environment,

Hi Steve,

The key drivers behind this platform are that we presently don't monitor the wide area network in a cohesive manner across the collaboration and as we are presently one of the biggest users of network within JANET it would help us/them identify issues on the network(s) more efficiently than we currently can. Also ATLAS are investigating the deployment of this service at ATLAS sites.
The Perfsonar allows us to monitor both bandwidth and latency issues within the network.
It also allows for inter site network testing which will help Tier2 D sites identify problems quickly as well as troubleshooting within the more traditional hub and spoke architecture we all have in common with RAL being at the centre of the network (hub).

We were planning on deploying GridMon and Perfsonar but have decided as a collaboration that it would be more effective to install one system and this would bring us into line with both the US and ATLAS requirements.

The platform has been deployed in two variants PS and MDM.
GridPP will be using the PS variant with an MDM install at Glasgow to test the differences between the two platforms.
The PS variant is in line with the US deployments for ATLAS and both systems interoperate with one another.
From what I can see on the GriPP wiki entry it all looks fairly straight forward.

The setup for a GridPP PS install can be found here:

Information on Perfsonar PS can be found here:

Information on Perfsonar MDM can be found here:

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone would like to volunteer for the second phase
of deployment of Perfsonar boxes?
Lancaster and Brunel have provisionally said that they would look at
deploying this service shortly and Glasgow will be enabling this
service in the coming 10 days.
It would be good if we could deploy the new service by the end of this
month if possible.

Mark

Mark,

To help us decide, could you please give me a brief rundown on these
questions (or point me to the right place):

Principle of operation of perfsonar - what does it do and how does it do
it.
Who's pushing for it and why? Does it have any special requirements over
and above basic server configuration.
How onerous is it to administer and maintain. Does it require any
"creativity", or do I just set it up and let it run?
How much traffic will it attract/emit? Should I care?

Steve
