Searching Google Scholar for Citation Analysis and for Specific Titles has

Searching Google Scholar for Citation Analysis and for Specific Titles has
Changed Somewhat

.

In the not at all distant past, when one searched a title of a research
article in Google Scholar in quotation marks to search this as a phrase,
one would usually find the source title searched at or near the top of
a list of search results that included a varying number of sources found
with this title search.

Now this outcome is not automatic. Consider this publication title:

"Decision making in child welfare: A critical review of the literature"

This search results in this single item result:

Decision making in child welfare: A critical review of the literature
L Jones - Child and Adolescent Social Work Journal, 1993 - Springer
Abstract The decision to intervene with families has enormous implications
for a democratic
society. Child protective services must both protect children and
families. Practice theory,
social policies, and agency procedures have not provided a consensus on
the criteria to ...
Cited by 67 Related articles All 4 versions Cite Save

The good news is that the other search result listings are not gone, just
hidden.

One must now click on this link below the result.

Showing the best result for this search. See all results

"See all results" is the link that brings back the additional citations
found with this title search in which quotation marks had been used to
make the title a phrase.

Original Search Result

All Results

http://tinyurl.com/l4s27xo

Since the first result in this case leads according to Google numbers to
67 citations and the "all results" list has only 51 source listings, one
may find that all the sources in the 51 records list are all contained in
the 67 citing sources, but for someone for whom these results are very
important, that researcher may want to look at both to be sure nothing of
importance is missed.

It can also be noted that the number of search results can exceed the
number of citing sources in some titles as is the case in this search:

http://tinyurl.com/kn4kvxk

Continuing to use this record as an illustration:

"Decision making in child welfare: A critical review of the literature"

If this citation represents a key listing of terms for a topic the user is
searching, one can subvert the title into a sequence of search terms and
get a far greater listing of source listings that may be heavily laden
with relevant sources if this approach leads to a useful set of search
terms and phrases.

Search strategy:

"Decision Making" AND "Child Welfare" AND Critical AND Review AND
Literature

About 26,900 results

This search leads to results including titles like these:

At the top of the results the original title that formed the basis of this
search

Decision making in child welfare: A critical review of the literature
L Jones - Child and Adolescent Social Work Journal, 1993 - Springer
Abstract The decision to intervene with families has enormous implications
for a democratic
society. Child protective services must both protect children and
families. Practice theory,
social policies, and agency procedures have not provided a consensus on
the criteria to ...
Cited by 67 Related articles All 4 versions Cite Save

Then these examples:

Reflexivity, its meanings and relevance for social work: A critical review
of the literature

The relative validity of actuarial-and consensus-based risk assessment
systems

Information integration in child welfare cases: An introduction to
statistical decision making

[CITATION] Decision making in child welfare: Errors and their context

Sex differences in the development of moral reasoning: A critical review

Elements of satisfying organizational climates in child welfare agencies

Risk assessment for child protective services: A review of the empirical
literature on instrument performance

Reliability of the foster care placement decision: A review

What do we know about child neglect? A critical review of the literature
and its application to social work practice

Since these results are more topically diffuse, this kind of search may be
useful when one finds a source in the neighborhood of a research
assignment topic one would like to pursue and then uses one or more
sources found in this type of search and the sources citing those sources
as a starting point for actual research topic decided upon when reviewing
these search results.

Effective use of Google Scholar is important as well in the area of
faculty credentialing or faculty evaluation as Google Scholar along with
Scopus and Web of Science are all mentioned in a large body of literature
discussing this topic.
