In his speech at the Royal Academy Dinner: May 1906 entitled 'Literature' Kipling referred to a 'condemned french thief'. Drawing on my distant memory of Montaigne's life I half recollected his being in trouble with his judicial superiors, but of course he was not a thief.
Can someone please correct me?
