An aside:
> Many designers might have heard about CS Peirce because of abduction but generally they haven't read him at length
Keith and Ken bring up Charles Sanders Peirce. Peirce’s semiotics always seemed like a real key to understanding design (and graphic design in particular.) It wasn’t for me but perhaps I gave up too easily.
One guy who didn’t give up is Steven Skaggs. Steve wrote a book called "FireSigns: A Semiotic Theory for Graphic Design" that takes Peircean analysis into the specifics of design forms. (When I double-checked that the title was one word with an InterCap, I noticed that Ken Friedman and Erik Stolterman are listed as editors.)
Many people will find the book maddeningly obsessive but if you like the concrete analysis of Peircean semiotics, it’s a good dive down the rabbit hole.
