Catherine,
some time ago I holidayed on Shetland and hoped to find some copper ore.
I spent a frustrating few days going through a list of sites being
unable to find anything substantial. Eventually I asked somewhere and
was told there was some iron Pyrites in the wall at the set off point
for Mousa. And there - after about an hour of looking - I finally found
a pin prick which looked vaguely like Copper pyrites.
However, you can easily see the "mine" there - if you go along the
beech and then scramble along the rocks till - I think there was some
kind of drain - behind which is a very big "hollow" - with a lot of
"rust" staining which was clearly the mine.
If however, you are looking for a really good copper mine in Scotland
you need to go to Monty Python's cave of Cairbannog. Aka the cave of the
killer rabbit which is on the shores of Loch Tay. However, it's a real
pain to find and parking is "interesting".
