A field name will be derived from the man farming the land, because it would
be the farmer who told the surveyor the field names. Footway may indeed be
a mining term for a man-access to a mine, but surely only to miners. To any
one else with would a mine or a shaft or an adit or a delph, as appropriate.

Dear Both Mike's (!),
Footway can indeed be a manway/shaft access (seen this on many old plans
over the years - metal mining anyway), unfortunately the footpath concept
could
be right as well, but I still favour the manway shaft thinking... but we
could be wrong!!!
