Call for Participants: GLOBAL MATHEMATICS

We invite contributions and expressions of interest for a symposium
proposal on GLOBAL MATHEMATICS for the 25th International Congress of
the History of Science and Technology, 23-29 July, 2017, in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil.

Mathematics today is presented as a global discipline. Mathematicians
regularly travel thousands of miles to present their work and to
collaborate. They share ideas and findings in an interconnected
community that spans nations, languages, and continents. We aim to
understand the emergence of this global system of mathematics in the
late nineteenth and twentieth centuries: what social, economic,
cultural and political changes made it possible? what effects did it
have on mathematicians' theories and institutions? how did it relate
to the global transformations of other sciences? what local variations
existed and how did they interact with the new global whole? Modeling
our inquiry on recent successful efforts to characterize the emergence
of international (but certainly far from global) mathematics in the
nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, we seek responses to these
and related questions from a wide range of geographic, chronological,
and methodological perspectives. We especially seek analyses of
mathematics (also in a broad sense, including for example applied
mathematics and mathematics education) that join actors and
institutions on multiple continents or that examine the global
connections of one or more specific localities.

We welcome contributions in any of the ICHST's official languages:
English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Chinese, Portuguese,
Russian, and Arabic. However, our preferred languages for
correspondence are English, Portuguese, French, or Spanish.

Please direct all correspondence to [log in to unmask]

Organizers: Michael J. Barany (Princeton University, USA), Rogério
Monteiro (Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil), Anne-Sandrine Paumier
(IHES, France).

Dates and Deadlines: please contact us by 30 March, 2016, after which
we will prepare a preliminary list of speakers for the symposium
proposal to send to the ICHST organizers. You will be notified whether
the symposium was approved in early July, 2016. Final registration for
the Congress and Symposium will be due in June, 2017.

(anglais, français, espagnol, allemand, italien, chinois, portugais,
russe, ou arabe) sont les bienvenues. Cependant nous préférons
échanger en anglais, portugais, français, ou espagnol.

Merci d'adresser toute correspondance à [log in to unmask]

Organisateurs: Michael J. Barany (Princeton University, EE.UU.),
Rogério Monteiro (Universidade de São Paulo, Brésil), Anne-Sandrine
Paumier (IHES, France).

emegência desse sistema desde o final do século XIX e no decorrer do
XX, procuramos responder a essas e outras questões similares a partir
de perspectivas geográficas, cronológicas e metodológicas bastante
largas.

Organizadores: Michael J. Barany (Princeton University, EUA), Rogério
Monteiro ( Universidade de São Paulo, Brasil), Anne-Sandrine Paumier
(IHES, France).

A notificação
