Dear Thomas,
i don't think that i've ever heard about abbots wearing mitres before (which
doesn't mean anything at all).
could the offending association be reflective of certain "secular"
associations which it had ?
if so, perhaps Bernie's opposition to the practice is connected to his
opposition to monasteries (or their priories) functioning as parish (secular)
churches ??
at least, i *believe* that he was involved in a contraversy about this later
question --weren't Cistercian abbeys were forbidden to so function, or engage
in "the cure of souls" ??
i'm *way* beyond my depth here, obviously.
best,
christopher
