DESIGNATION AND REGIONAL HUBS: what do they mean for the library domain?
Stamford, Thursday 26 September 2002
CPI Library and Information Policy Seminar
Resource's Designation Scheme supports collections of national importance in
non-National museums around the country, and brings in substantial funding.
Plans are in hand to extend the scheme to libraries and archives, with a
focus on special collections in libraries and on archival 'treasures'.
The creation of Regional Hubs in each of the nine English regions is a new
Resource initiative to champion regional museum practice and promote
excellence. Partner museums will work together to provide leadership and to
improve standards. They will work closely with the new regional agencies
which will provide strategic leadership for museums, archives and libraries
in all the regions by April 2004.
The theme of this cross-sectoral seminar is the potential implications for
the libraries domain of the implementation of Regional Hubs, and of the
extension of the Designation Scheme to libraries and archives.
The aim is to help library managers make the most of the new opportunities,
to raise awareness of the issues, to enable experience of other domains to
be understood, and to improve the climate for sharing and for collaboration.
Speakers will consider the potential benefits and challenges for libraries
of these schemes, and the implications for cross-domain collaboration and
for the work of regional bodies.
The target audience is LIS managers, regional and government bodies, library
partnerships and co-operatives, library schools, independent consultants -
and archive and museum managers.
