Without wanting this to sound too much like a shameless plug, it might be worth adding that the consortium of North West Academic Libraries (NoWAL) offers excellent quality LIS training and development events in the North West.

Hi Gillian

Totally with you on that one and we're not nearly so far north!

I have suggested at least one to our regional committee (CoFHE NW) though to see if they could run it again locally - I've offered to host & arrange, so I suppose that is another option.

Hello all,
The last 8 CILIP courses promoted on LIS-LINK were all in London. Can I just put out a plea from the regions, for CILIP to please consider offering a Northern location for its courses? Perhaps CILIP could arrange to deliver each of its courses at two or three venues annually around the country?

Subject: CILIP Training course: WORKING WITH AND IN GROUPS, 5 & 6 June 2007, London

WORKING WITH AND IN GROUPS
5 & 6 June 2007, London

Groups make up a large part of the workplace and can be specialist groups, working parties or just the informal groups that exist in any organisation. They differ from a normal departmental team in that a group tends to come together for a specific purpose but its members work independently. A group may have a leader but the roles and functions of the other group members may not be well defined. Managers, supervisors and trainers all have to work in or with groups. Many find themselves in, or leading groups without any training in or understanding of group dynamics or how to make the group work effectively.

BENEFITS OF ATTENDING
This course will provide an opportunity to experience several types of groups. The different approaches needed to both be a member of and to lead or work with these different types will also be reviewed.

BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE:
· discussed group theory and the different styles of group
· looked at managing different types of group and leadership styles
· developed the skills to manage different types of groups
· practised leading groups within the course

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Anyone involved in or leading/managing a group

COURSE LEADER: PETER FIRKIN
Peter has worked as a trainer for over 25 years. He has considerable experience in the development of training and learning and specialises in a number of areas including coaching, managing staff development, presentation skills and managing difficult situations.
