Hi Nickie,
If you are interested in LibraryThing, then you could do worse than go
to our conference in June (http://www.millennium-users.org/) Tim's
coming over to Ireland in June to speak to us.
I don't think that LibraryThing offers the alternative catalogue that
you seek though I would *love* it if they did. OCLC piloting a product
now called WorldCat Local
(http://www.oclc.org/news/releases/200659.htm), which might be what you
are looking for though.
We'll be discussing union catalogues at our conference as we are
considering this route for our libraries.
All the best,
David Kane

cross-posted, so apologies if you see this more than once.
My line manager has discovered LibraryThing -
http://www.librarything.com and is interested in exploring its potential
as a union catalogue for various libraries affiliated to the one in
which I work. The affiliations are loose and we can't use z39.50 to
browse each other's catalogues, nor can we all see each other's
catalogues via the internet.
Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of LibraryThing - and are
there any viable alternatives that offer a similar service?
