Dear Colleagues,
I am using the Iatlian mailbase to advertise the Study Day on
contemporary Italian cinema which is being organised by Daniela
Treveri Gennari and Pauline Small, and will take place on Saturday
29th January 2000 at the Oxford University Department for Continuing
Education, Rewley House, Wellington Square, Oxford. Some of you may
already have been circulated with the programme, but there have been
some amendments, and in this summary I will also give some further
details on the content of the individual papers. Speakers and topics
are:
Mary Wood(Birkbeck College, University of London): 'The late films of
Rosi and Bertolucci: the seduction of spectacle'
Pauline Small(QMW, University of London): 'The films of Amelio and
Moretti: a withdrawal from the political sphere?'
The paper of John foot (UC,University of London)'The Milan
Connection' can now more accurately be entitled 'The rise of the non-
cinematic city: Milan and Italian cinema in the 1990s.' (with
particular reference to the films of Soldini, Piccioni- 'Fuori dal
mondo', and Salvatores - 'Nirvana')
There will be an additional paper, presented by Derek
Duncan(University Of Bristol), entitled'Representations of
masculinity in Italian cinema of the 80s and 90s' (with particular
reference to Tavianis - 'Good Morning Babylon, Salvatores -
'Mediterraneo', and Benigni - 'La vita e' bella)
The day will conclude with a round table during which there will be
general discsussion about the problems of the Italian film industry
in the 90s - and hence the overall title of the Study Day: 'The
Rebirth of Italian Cinema' and its subtitle:'What kind of rebirth?'
