For the sake of clarity, and in keeping with the issue of foreign control of
lands, power, and church polity, one ought to acknowledge that Henry, who,
after all, brought the d.f. to that string of royal initials, did not "get
rid of the Church." The Church had been in the British Isles since earliest
times and, without Papal control, it remained there after Henry's hot pants
had cooled. He seized upon a sentiment that had been in the wind for some
time before him. Such an audacious power and land grab could not have
endured otherwise.
