Hi!
My name is Harding Arkarum, and I've recently joined the university of
Exeter. I am writing a PhD on so called Holy Wells, or sacred springs
associated with mental health and with the usage of waters to heal what we
would now term psychiatric illness, from earliest times to present. I am
specifically interested in the processes by which the water was said to act
on the minds or ailments of the person to be healed. I have come to the UK
fresh from Rutgers University in the US, where I graduated in psychology,
and my speciality is the psychology of folklore and mythology, a combination
only the US system would permit!
I first became interested in Holy Wells when I visited the UK some five
years ago, and went to Derbyshire with my host family.
I will join in the debate more freely when I have read more of it.
But for now, I wanted to ask someone, what is is this conference you mention
next year? I would be very interested to attend. Am I right in thinking that
Harrogate is near the limestone area of North Yorkshire? I know that in the
Smollett Novel, Humphrey Clinker, the place is visited as a fashionable Spa.
If the people in Derbyshire venerate the waters, not the site, then why is
it not acceptable to 'dress' any water site? I can see it is permissible to
prohibit buckets and such, but if place is not that important to them , then
any natural or conduited source should be acceptable.
