I would judge very much by your particular circumstances viz. what was the
vandalism etc. situation pre the restoration. The fact that you know of stonework
thefts in the near area might be cause for caution. Also, what are people going
to have to cross to reach the well ? Fields with livestock regularly in them
could lead to problems with local landowners if it's likely that publicity would
mean a big increase in visitors, for example, is the well near a well used
footpath which would mean that people would divert to view it. I had major
reservations about doing the Binsey "Wellwatch" reports for many of the above
reasons. A major factor in the decision to go ahead is that the well was
already known, was mentioned in local guidebooks, was, albeit in a minor way, on
the local tourist routes & had very clear routes of access already up & running -
all approaches are on roads or farm tracks which are open to the public & fenced
off from local livestock. I have to admit that I would not have done "well watch"
for a more hidden less accessible place.
