Dear Mr? Mrs? Powell,
Glad you have come across the Peter bellamy collection. We have put a
review of it in our Dec Journal by Bob Copper.
Your query as to origin is that it is a verse contained in "The Song of the
English" - entitled She calls us, still unfed. Ther verse goes as follows;-
We have fed our sea for a thousand years
And she calls us still unfed
Though there's never a wave of all her waves
But marks our English dead.
It is opposite a delightful painting by Heath Robinson showing a large
sailing ship approaching a dead maiden floating on the surface.
Hope this helps Best wishes Michael Smith (Hon.Sec. Kipling Society)
