Dear Listmembers
I am very pleased to announce the publication of
'A Virtual Tomb for Kelvingrove: Virtual Reality, Archaeology and
Education' by Melissa Terras in Issue 7 of Internet Archaeology:
http://intarch.ac.uk/journal/issue7/terras_index.html
The core of the article discusses the practicalities involved in creating
a virtual reality model for use in a public space - in this instance, a
VRML model of the Egyptian tomb of Sen-nedjem, was developed for
installation in the Egyptian Gallery of the Kelvingrove Museum and Art
Gallery, Glasgow. The highlight of the article has to be the
publication of the fully functioning VR model of the tomb itself,
incorporating interactive elements, photorealistic representation
of the tomb paintings, as well as a partial 'fly-through' animation.
A plug-in is required to view the model. Two versions have been created by
the author to accommodate as many readers as possible (VRML model with
inner tomb images 20MB / without inner tomb images 1.5MB) but the model is
unavoidably large and requires a substantial amount of memory - several
stills of the model have also been provided.
The article raises the issues surrounding the nature of representation and
reconstruction which will have to be addressed before such models will
become commonplace in the museums of the future. The possibility that
virtual models like this may have a very real use in conservation is also
raised. Your comments are, as always, very welcome.
