Subject: NorFA post graduate course, Summer 2000

Social Policy and Intervention - in a gender perspective.
Theoretical and practical problems for research in a comparative
perspective

 1st-5th June 2000, Archangels, Russia

A postgraduate Nordic- NW Russian Research Course, Funded by NorFa
Bodö Regional University & Pomor State University

 * Aims of the course:

This course will address social problems in a gender perspective. The
abuse of women is a phenomenon observed across societies, cultures and
family
types. The political interest in social problems within the private
sphere, especially domestic violence and child abuse, has increased, however
the
policies designed to meet these problems are different in different
countries and cultures. The aim of the course is to identify and discuss how
and to what degree intervention strategies varies between different welfare
regimes; the Scandinavian social democratic countries and the
post-communist Russia, and with reference also to liberal and corporatist
welfare regimes in Europe and North-America. Welfare regimes differ in many
ways; as to how they give priority to services (the Scandinavian countries)
or transfers (Germany), as to the role and division of labour between
private and public sector, as they prefer market or voluntary agencies and
the organisation of welfare bureaucracies differ as to the role of
politicians and professionals. This course will however have a special focus
on the strength and nature of their family policies and the security and
protection of women within their social policy programs.

> Intervention strategies will be studied at different policy levels, from
> the macro level to the relationship between professionals and clients.
> Special focus will be out on crisis centres for abused women and on
> intervention strategies for alcohol and drug abuse among mothers and
> pregnant women.
