UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE
RESEARCH FELLOW IN THE CENTRE FOR RURAL ECONOMY

The Centre for Rural Economy (CRE) is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow
for a period of five years to undertake research that will complement CRE's
current interests in rural development and agri-environment issues.
Applications are invited from persons with strong research experience and
with a background in geography, economics, sociology, political science, or
other social science discipline.

CRE is a social science research centre in the Department of Agricultural
Economics and Food Marketing at the University of Newcastle (grade 5 in the
last Research Assessment Exercise). Broadly, it is interested in research
that supports the development of a sustainable rural economy.

Multi-disciplinary research is a hallmark of CRE's work. It operates within
a UK and European context and is also active on rural issues in the north
of England. CRE is committed to disseminating the findings of its research
not only to academic audiences, but also to policy makers and
practitioners. To this end, it engages actively in current debates on rural
policy and planning.

CRE was set up in 1992 with core funding from a Trust in memory of the 10th
Duke of Northumberland. The Director, Philip Lowe, to whom the Research
Fellow will be responsible, has a strong track record of research in
environmental politics and policy making, and in the sociology of rural
development.

THE POST

The Research Fellow will spend the greatest proportion of his or her time
conducting independent research in their own chosen field. They will also
be part of a team, undertaking some specific studies and consultancy work
at the request of the Director, a small amount of teaching related to their
research and an element of PhD supervision. The Research Fellow will be
expected to publish widely within refereed publications, attract research
funds and communicate research findings effectively to both academics and
policy makers. They will also contribute, where necessary, to various
activities organised by CRE such as the publication series, newsletter,
organisation of conferences and meetings and internal seminars.

Necessary requirements:

· A social scientist with a background in geography, economics, sociology,
political science, or other social science discipline

· A post-graduate research degree (preferably doctorate) or equivalent
research experience

· Experience of undertaking independent research in a social science
discipline, beyond a higher degree

· A track record of academic publishing (at least 4 journal articles
published or in the pipeline)

· A research interest in the area of rural development or agri-environment

 Desirable requirements:

· Experience in attracting research funding and preparing research
applications

· Experience of working with, and learning from, other disciplines

· Experience of working in a European context

· Aptitude for communicating directly with policy makers and non-academic
users of research

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Salary will be at an appropriate point within the range £16286-24479 per
annum on the Grade RA1A scale, according to qualifications and experience.
It is intended that the five year appointment will begin April 2000, or as
soon as possible thereafter.
