Colleagues
I am hoping, as a long term project, to prepare a new edition of Scotland's
first printed book, the Breviarium Aberdonense (Edinburgh, 1509-10). A
handsome facsimile edition was prepared for the Scottish historical clubs
in 1854, using black letter type. Unfortunately, the editor silently
corrected many misprints in the original, left many others uncorrected, and
made a few of his own; but since he didn't provide any notes or apparatus,
the reliability of the facsimile is vitiated. So it will need to be
carefully collated with the original. I doubt that the print quality of
the original is sufficiently regular for successful OCRing.
Can anyone please advise me of good OCR software which should be able to
read black letter type? Since funding is very limited, I may have to pay
for this myself, and do not want to buy anything really expensive. The
book is in Latin, I don't know if that makes a difference.
Thanks in advance,
Alan
