L'ASSOCIATION DES PROFESSEURS D'ALLEMAND DES UNIVERSITES CANADIENNES/
CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY TEACHERS OF GERMAN
Call for Papers
Annual Meeting, May 24-27, 2000
University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta
Members of the APAUC/CAUTG are invited to submit proposals for papers to
be given at the annual meeting, MAY 24-27, 2000 at the UNIVERSITY OF
ALBERTA.
Papers based on original research on ANY TOPIC OR PERIOD OF GERMAN
LANGUAGE, LITERATURE, DIDACTICS OR STUDIES ARE MOST WELCOME.
Interdisciplinary approaches will also be considered.
Special Session
Especially welcome for a special session are submissions dealing with the
theme "Looking at Multiculturalism in the German-Speaking Countries." The
rapid growth of "ethnic" communities has characterized not just
Canada/Quebec, but the German-speaking countries as well. What, we may
wonder, have been the comparative and contrasting political, social and
cultural ramifications of the new demographics?
What does the concept of "multiculturalism" signal and signify in
Canada/Quebec as opposed to Germany, Austria and Switzerland? How do
official discourses on multiculturalism compare and contrast in each case?
What can we read out of their differences? What specific political agendas
are tied in each instance to national multicultural debates? To what
extent is public discourse of multiculturalism tied to or independent from
the American debate on this issue? What is the connection between the rise
of national public discourses on multiculturalism and the emergence of
globalization and global culture?
How has multiculturalism affected the cultural marketplace in the
German-speaking countries? To what extent is ethnicity reflected in the
producers, consumers and subject matter of cultural products such as--but
not restricted to--books, films, rock videos, TV programmes and magazines?
What values are encoded in portrayals of specific ethnic communities? To
what extent do these portrayals congrue or differ when we cross national
borders? How are we to interpret these similarities or differences? By
looking at multiculturalism in the German-speaking world, can we more
clearly recognize and articulate the specificity of Canadian--or
Quebecois--multiculturalism?
Pedagogical Day
The conference this year will also feature an extra day of presentations
and workshops devoted to the pedagogical issues affecting German teachers
in Canadian schools and universities. The theme is "Neue Erkenntnisse der
Spracherwerbsforschung und deren didaktische Umsetzung fuer den Unterricht
Deutsch als Fremdsprache." Some questions CAUTG members may also wish to
address in panel discussions/papers include: What is the future of German
and the teaching of German in a world increasingly dominated by English?
How does the increasingly multiethnic, multilingual and multicultural
classroom affect conventional teaching strategies and texts? What problems
and challenges are posed by the widespread use of language textbooks
lacking a Canadian subject position? What strategies can we devise for
improving student retention at every level? Are our students and our
teaching materials well matched? How can we promote German more
effectively to high school and university students? What role can the
CAUTG and other professional associations play in lobbying more
successfully for public, political and fiscal support?
