I am forwarding a letter from a student of mine to the EBH group.

I am currently undertaking Honours research as part of my study of
physiotherapy. My project title is "The Analysis of Visual Analogue Scale
(VAS) Pain Data Using Parametric and Non-parametric tests". The aim of the
research is to
1) examine the nature of VAS data and to determine whether assumptions for
the use of parametric tests are typically violated when applied to pain
data measured on a VAS
2) determine whether violations, if they occur, are likely to affect
research conclusions .
Researchers appear fairly evenly divided in the method selected to analyse
VAS pain data, choosing either parametric or non parametric tests. I am
looking for researchers who are willing to provide some raw data obtained
using the VAS to measure physical pain. The data will be subjected to
various statistical tests to ascertain whether the application of a
particular test affects the conclusions drawn about that data. The results
may be published in my thesis and in journals and presented at conferences.
If you were willing to "donate" data, I would appreciate knowing the type
of pain being measured (i.e., back pain, shoulder pain, etc) and the type
of VAS used ie the range of scores and whether it was a vertical or
horizontal scale.
Any form for the data would be received with gratitude, but electronically
in spreadsheet form is the easiest for me. The data should contain no
information that might enable me to identify patients.

I would also value insights of readers interested in this topic
