Hi all (and Raju especially)
I should like to say thank you to Raju for his generous response to a
difficult debate. Personally, I do not have any difficulties with the
position he has just outlined, and look forward to some easier conversations
(and perhaps some friendly disagreements) in the future - hopefully in
person at some stage. Also, I have enjoyed Raju's enthusiasm for ideas and
questioning. No doubt in many geographer's enthusiasm for exploring cultural
differences, we have lost sight at times of the value (if not of the
difficulties) of a politics which engages more directly with capitalism -
although the resurgence of popular movements in some places doing just that
is interesting, and might well lead geographers to be more attentive again
to material issues in politics. Good to be kept on our toes.... And to have
some debate, on an important issue, rather than simply declaring different
sections of the discipline to be hopelessly irrelevant or wrong.
