Millennium Research Opportunities
The School of Education and Social Science is committed to a further significant development of its research acitivity and profile as it enters the new Millennium. As a part of this, the School is creating five Research Associateships, with bursaries of £5,956 p.a. (plus fees and appropriate expenses) to support the conduct of research degrees across all its subject areas. Research degree proposals are particularly welcomed with the following specific focii:
Education - 2 bursaries - Ref SESS1 [especially: recruitment of minority ethnic and male students to ITT courses; equality of access, treatment and outcomes of non-traditional and mature entrants to HE; initiatives in widening access to HE and implications for learning and teaching; continuing education and lifelong learning; statutory and voluntary sector provision for young children or those seen as having educational and behavioural disorders]
Sociology - 1 bursary Ref SESS2 [especially: grief, loss and change in adult life; other possibilities include Visual Anthropology/Sociology; history of Sociology; Sociology of Health and Illness; Literary and Sociological Imaginations; Contemporary Social Theory; Social Values and Attitudes]
Counselling and Psychotherapy - 1 bursary - Ref SESS3 [especially: training and supervision of Cognitive Behavioural Therapists; development of competence in CBP; the therapeutic relationship in CBP].
Religious Studies and Sociology - 1 bursary - Ref SESS4 [especially Sociology of South Asian religion in Britain; Weber, sociology and religion; religion and contemporary critical theory; conversion; graves; religious values and attitudes].
The Education, Sociology and Religious Studies/Sociology bursaries may be offered either as Graduate Teaching Assistantships or Graduate Assistantships (involving, respectively, up to six hours a week teaching or contribution to another research project). The Counselling and Psychotherapy bursary is available only as a Graduate Teaching Assistantship.
