Dear colleagues,
I would like to thank you for the messages regarding my post of the Mailbase
Acceptable Use Policy.
Jameela is absolutely right: it is a daunting piece of legalese in many regards.
However, as Jameela also understands, it was necessary for me to post it to all of
you. Claire's reply was about as simple and accurate as it gets (i.e., if in doubt,
ask me!). Loredana asked a good question about the suitability of particular kinds of
messages, to which I reply:
I warmly invite you to post directly to the list (as long as they comply with all
other norms):
academic or academic-related job advertisements
and
academic or academic-related conference or lecture announcements
Regarding publications: I find this a difficult matter on which to be precise, as
some people's understanding of what is relevant to the list may differ from my own
notions. But AS A GENERAL RULE, in future:
a) if you are able to post a copy of your academic or academic-related publication or
product (whether you have written it or published it) to me, I will very happily and
promptly post to the list complete bibliographical information about the publication,
and (where appropriate) complete information about how it may be ordered and
purchased.
b) if you are unable to post a copy of your publication or product to me, then I will
very happily give you my permission to post information (academic and financial)
about it to the list, if you first send me an e-mail with the information you would
like to post.
c) If you post information about a publication or product to the list without
consulting me first, then I will do one of three things:
one: If I believe your message to be irrelevant or inappropriate to the list,
then I will write to you (and perhaps to the list) and tell you so.
two: If I find your message to be relevant to the list, then I may write you to
let you know what I think.
three: If I'm very very very busy (almost never!), I may even do nothing!
Please let me know if you have any questions about the use of our italian-studies
list.
Best wishes,
George
