Hi Lawrence
I am sorry to say I don't know where you can get a transcript of the
programme in which Baroness Warnock said that her group had come up with
'the purpose of education is enjoyment' The programme was " 'Melvin
Bragg-In our Time' in which Melvin Brag and guests discuss ideas and events
which have influenced our time." Broadcast on BBC radio 4 Thursday 4/1/99
at 9.00 am and repeated at 9.30 pm. You could try the BBC direct or via
their web pages.
And to Mairian
I would make two points. One was that Baroness Warnock was talking about a
time in the past..when for the first time since the war, the government of
the UK was asking for advice on the education of children who would 'never
become financial contributors to our society'. She was reflecting back at
a thin end of a wedge so to speak.
The second point is that those of us who regardless of impairment were
educated in what are variously called 'progressive, 'democratic' or 'child
owned' schools reject as such the right to have our education externally
assessed. We can be the only true judges, individually, on what we consider
to be our education.
I would refer you all..all thinkers about social policy and the right of
the individual to the Summerhill School web page and it's 'save summerhill'
mail list.
Enjoy!
Amaryllis
