CTI Mathematics Monthly Report
October 1999
------------------------------
Further negotiations took place in respect of the new Learning and Teaching
Support Network Centre for Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research,
and we hope the contract will shortly be in place. In the meantime we are
pleased to announce MathGate - an Internet subject gateway for mathematics,
which will be operational in Spring 2000.
Locating useful and relevant mathematics materials from the millions of Web
sites now available on the Internet is a difficult task for any researcher to
undertake. MathGate will help by providing access to quality resources in the
field of mathematics. The project forms part of a national initiative to
coordinate a Resource Discovery Network across all disciplines and grouped into
hubs. MathGate will be developed by Information Services at the University of
Birmingham in partnership with CTI Mathematics, as part of the EMC Hub, which
will coordinate gateways in engineering, mathematics and computing.
MathGate will provide access to networked resources such as online documents,
electronic journals, email lists, software, Web sites of professional societies
and research centres and university departments. The resources will be
selected, evaluated and regularly monitored by subject specialists. The
emphasis will be on UK Web sites but the best resources world-wide will also be
included.
Other CTI Mathematics activities continued as usual during October. The
November edition of Maths&Stats was prepared, including software reviews of
Mathletics, O-Matrix and Cinderella, five book reviews, a report on the MathML
workshops held earlier in the year, and an introduction to the MINOS syntax-
free computer algebra package. Final arrangements were made for a Matlab
workshop in conjunction with the CTI Centres for Engineering and Physics, to be
held on Monday 13 December at Queen Mary and Westfield College, London.
