Dear ASMI member,
The ASMI AGM will be held immediately after the annual conference on
Saturday 27th November. One of the items on the agenda is to discuss
any proposals for the annual conferences in 2000 and 2001. I have just
received a written proposal from Dr. Robert Lumely and Dr. John Foot
for the 2000 annual conference, which is copied below. Any other
proposals should be made at the AGM for consideration or circulated by
e-mail via this mailbase ([log in to unmask]) if you wish to do so
(though I am not sure what proportion of the membership is reached in
this way).
Martin Brown, ASMI Secretary
"CITY AND IDENTITY. ITALIAN CITIES IN THE INDUSTRIAL ERA"
Proposal for a two-day conference to be held in November 2000.
Organised in conjunction with the UCL Centre for Italian Studies 'City
and Identity' Research Project with the financial support of the Arts
and Humanites Research Board.
Organisers: Dr. John Foot and Dr. Robert Lumley
The conference would aim to bring together scholars of urban Italy from
a wide range of subject-areas to discuss the key themes of identity,
urban history and cityness in the industrial era. Papers could be
expected to address themes such as: immigration and the city; the
public sphere; representations of the city in cinema and literature;
urban regeneration and contested spaces; sport and urban identities.
Papers with a comparative (inter-city) perspective would be
particularly welcome. Paper-givers would be expected to both provide
other panellists with copies of their papers well before the conference.
A core of papers would be given by those involved in the City and
Identity Research Project, but there would be the normal call for
papers with special consideration for research students with research
in progress (with the possibility of a special 'poster'
session) and the likelihood of parallel sessions.
