Conference Announcement and Call for Papers
Ecological Modernization in Russia
International Conference
25.-27.4.2000, Helsinki, Finland
You are invited to participate in an International Conference on
Ecological Modernization in Russia, organized by the Aleksanteri
Institute (The Finnish Centre for Russian and East European Studies)
in co-operation with Department of Social Policy, University of
Helsinki, and Finnish Society for Environmental Social Science.
The workshops are organized around such questions as the following:
· Is new Russian economy inevitably caught on a treadmill, which
drives it towards collapse, or is an ecologically sustainable modern
society a feasible option? · Can we open up and revitalise the social
sciences in order to find innovative approaches for diagnosing
environmental predicaments in Russia? · Can we overcome the Russian
environmental crises by making use of the potentialities of modernity
or should we have to leave the path of enlightenment modernity for
something else? · To what extent are local, national or international
policies able to develop strategies for ecological modernisation in
Russia?
The conference organizers would welcome papers on any of these themes.
