Hello everyone,
my name is Iris and I am a German student presently pursuing a PhD at
the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies, University of Birmingham.
My broad research interests are in the field of urban cultural policy
and visitor attractions.
For my PhD, I plan to look into the historical development of urban
cultural policies and how this influenced the provision of cultural
attractions, in particular museums. Originally from Frankfurt, with
its very active approach towards cultural representation particularly
in the 70's and 80's (ref. Hilmar Hoffmann and Daniel Cohn-Bendit),
I would like to propose that this city underwent a radical
transformation in its cultural policy in recent years. Whereas the
term 'culture' provoked a lot of conflict in the early
(modernist?) years and served as an active generator for open
political discourse, 'culture' seems to represent today a
(post-modernist?) concept of relativism.
If there is anyone interested in discussing these ideas further, or
thinks of similar/opposite developments in other cities, I am looking
forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Iris
