The editor seeks contributions for a book on Colors 1800/1900/2000:
Signs of Ethnic Difference. Essays will explore the role of color and
vision in the perception and representation of ethnic difference in
the German-speaking countries. All scholarly perspectives are invited;
essays with truly comparative or cross-disciplinary perspectives (e.g.
non-German literatures, art, cinema, history, music, psychoanalysis
etc.) are especially welcomed. Contributions should address processes
of (de-)emphasizing color (e.g. literal, metaphorical, of skin, of
nature etc.) in the formation of sociological, historical,
geographical and artistic understandings of ethnic difference.
Preference will be given to theoretically informed essays that
investigate the shifting alliances between vision and text, vision and
reason/philosophy etc. at the turns of centuries, and that
consequently enable us to explore the alteration of concepts around
2000, as opposed to 1900 and 1800.
Please send abstracts (700 words by December 31,1999) and inquiries,
including inquiries about publishers and expected publication date, to
the editor. Contributions accepted in either English or German. Essays
of approximately 20 pages must be completed by October 1, 2000.
