As part of an EU-Life award, the University of Greenwich, School of
Earth & Environmental Sciences is currently searching for 2 MPhil/PhD
and 1 MSc by Research students. The EU-Life award is collaborative
effort between Medway Council, The University of Greenwich, RSPB,
English Nature, Blue Circle Industries, the Environment Agency and
Cliffe Parish Council to create a nature reserve in an area of the
north Kent Marshes formerly used for mining chalk and aggregate. The
area has a number of shallow lagoons with unique biotic species and is
an area of nesting for migrating birds. The lagoons, formerly chalk
pits, were formed by in-filling the pits with Thames river dredgings
and in places the marsh surface has also been raised using dredgings.
The first MPhil/PhD project is a study of the hydrologic and
hydro-geochemical controls on the shallow lagoons at Cliffe. The
study involves a baseline hydrologic survey and the initiation of a
water quality monitoring programme for maintenance of lagoon water
quality. The potential student should have a good first degree in
hydrogeology, geology with hydrogeology, environmental geology or
environmental or civil engineering.
The second project is an investigation of the dredged sediments that
have been disposed of on site to determine sediment distribution,
composition , thickness and an assessment of any contamination within
those sediments. The student should have a good first degree in
geology, geochemistry, or environmental chemistry.
The final project, an MSc by research is to set up a GIS and conduct a
survey on public transport routes into the area to assess vehicular
traffic impact on the local community. The student should have a good
first degree in Geography or GIS.
