After perusing the City of London Police website [1], I find that they are
still looking for 'suspects' from the June 18th Carnival against
Capitalism. Seeing that none of the suspects is actually accused of any
individual crime, I sent this letter to the Police
As an academic who sometimes writes about global protest, I was interested
to see the pictures on your website of 'suspects' from June 18th.
However, I am deeply worried by the attempt to identify these people. There
are no individual crimes of which these people are accused indicated. So,
of what are they being accused? Having unusual haircuts? Being black (in
several cases)? Owning a bicycle? Or just of being there?
How can you expect anyone to co-operate with the police when there are no
indications of what these people have done? Or are you just hoping that
people will be prejudiced enough to turn people in because of the way they
look?
Yours
David.
