Bruce Howard of Hampshire County Council wrote to the smrforum mailbase
list...
"...Personally I feel that we should have a nationally agreed list of date
ranges for at least the more general periods such as Bronze Age, Iron Age
etc even though any date cut-off is bound to be somewhat artificial. I
would see this as a form of data standard that we should be able to agree."
...and this is exactly what FISHEN are intending to do during the Autumn.
The main sources gathered (so far) are the NMR derived list, and the British
and Irish Archaeological Bibliography chronological guide which also gives
(U.K. wide) definitions of Period terms. I'd be interested to hear
contributions from anyone (either on this list, or on fishen's own mailbase
discussion list*) on the idea of a 'national' definition of these terms
versus a national definition of the terms but with a regional definition of
the date ranges.
