Dear all,
I have just joined this mailbase as a way of hopefully tapping into some
specialist knowledge. I am responsible for the Durham sites and monuments
record and over the last few months we seem to have had several enquiries
about wells. One in particular I would appreciate thoughts, information,
comment on.
St Firmin's sometimes spelt Fermen's well is located close to Bowes Village
in the Durham North Pennines just to the north of the Yorkshire Dales. The
site lies next to an ancient trackway at the base of an escarpment
,immediately below a Roman Fort and vicus and a later Norman castle. The
site of the well is today tumbled down and overgrown but clearance by a
local history group has revealed a small drystone construction niche in
the hillside with a shallow basin in front. The site appears to have been
abandoned in early Victorian times.
Does anyone know anything of St. Firmin, any other such dedications and
indeed if there maybe any possible classical or Roman associations?
Any help gratefully received
